Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

What to see: Built in 1892, the lighthouse stands on a promontory in Burgos, 45 kilometers north of Laoag City. It still sends out signals to ships passing by the Cape facing the northern portion of the South China Sea. It is known to be the highest lighthouse in the Philippines.

What to see: It was built as the official residence of then President Ferdinand E. Marcos in Ilocos Norte, overlooking the famous Paoay Lake. This imposing structure is now a museum. There is a minimal entrance fee.

Museo Ilocos Norte
Address: Laoag City, Ilocos Norte
What to see: Erected in 1878 and known as the Tabacalera Building, this edifice was originally designed as the Administrative Center of the Tobacco Monopoly in Ilocos Norte during the reign of Spain over the Philippine Islands. In early 1999, the Provincial Government launched a major rehabilitation and restoration program for the building, thereby reintroducing the provincial museum. The said museum, prior to a temporary lull, was housed in this building in the early ’70s. The Museo Ilocos Norte now serves as repository of GAMENG, the vast cultural heritage of the people of Ilocos Norte.

Sinking Bell Tower

What to see: Located almost a hundred meters away from the St. William’s Cathedral, the tower is famous because it is almost half-buried in the ground, leaning slightly to the north.

Tobacco Monopoly Monument

What to see: The monument was constructed at the foot of the Marcos Bridge to serve as a memorial to the lifting of the Tobacco Monopoly, which dominated Ilocos from 1872 to 1881.

Paoay Church

What to see: Paoay Church is famous for its unique architecture that combines the Gothic, Baroque and Oriental styles. The construction of the Church began in 1704 only to be finished in 1894. A few meters away from the Church is the coralstone belltower which served as observation post of the “Katipuneros” during the Philippine Revolution. Paoay Church is included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

St. William’s Cathedral

What to see: The Augustinians built the church of Italian Renaissance design in 1612. Its unique 2-storey facade is held by four pairs of coupled columns. The Church is home to the image of the Patron Saint of Laoag City.

Sta. Monica Church

What to see: Built facing the river in Sarrat, approximately 7 kilometers east of Laoag, this century-old church is of Neo-classical and Baroque architecture. Beside it is a ruin of an old building and a museum.
